Red McCombs has been
active in the oil industry for more than 45 years. However,
his significant commitment to the exploration and production
areas of the industry began in the mid 1960's during his
early business relationship with Bill Forney. Originally
from Kingfisher, Oklahoma, Bill entered the oil business
after World War II and became a successful independent oil
and gas producer in San Antonio. On an "old-fashioned handshake,"
Bill and Red became partners in numerous oil deals, primarily
in South Texas. This was also the beginning of a life-long
friendship. They were involved in the discoveries of McCaskill
Field (1971), Karnes County, Texas, Charline Field (1978)
and Schreiner Ranch Field (1982), Live Oak County, Texas
and the extension of S.E. Bonus Field (1983), Wharton County,
Texas, and many other oil and gas fields, primarily in Texas.
Eventually, Red's long-standing partnership with Bill evolved
into Forney & McCombs, and on January 1, 1998, the separate
oil and gas assets of Forney Oil and McCombs were consolidated
into McCombs Energy,
L.L.C. Management and staff of Forney & McCombs
assumed the responsibility of McCombs Energy with the goal
of significantly increasing Red's oil and gas exploration
activity.
Red has a wide range of business interests including automobile
dealerships, communications, professional sports, ranching
and real estate. Red began his career in the car business
in 1950 and today Red
McCombs Automotive consists of seven dealerships in
San Antonio. Red is co-founder of Clear
Channel Communications, a global leader in the out-of-home
advertising industry with radio and television stations
and outdoor displays in 32 countries around the world. He
owned the Minnesota Vikings
of the NFL from the 1998 season through the 2004 season.
Prior to his football team ownership, Red owned the Denver
Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs of the NBA. Koontz
McCombs, headquartered in San Antonio, is a multi-faceted
commercial real estate development, construction and brokerage
firm established in 1997 and is involved in the development
and/or acquisition of over 1,250,000 square feet of commercial
property. In addition to Red's business interests, he is
well known for his philanthropy having recently made the
single largest donation in University of Texas history and
was honored for that gift with the renaming of the UT School
of Business to the Red McCombs School of Business.
